Sylvia Serfaty, professeure à l’Institut de mathématiques de New York University, va recevoir le Prix Maryam Mirzakhani 2024 lors du congrès annuel de l’Académie nationale des sciences des États-Unis (NAS) le 28 avril 2024.
Le prix Maryam Mirzakhani est un prix décerné tous les 4 ans depuis 1988 pour l’excellence de la recherche en sciences mathématiques publiée au cours des dix dernières années.
Serfaty has made impactful contributions to the study of nonlinear partial differential equations, variational problems, and statistical physics problems.
More precisely, Serfaty has studied problems from condensed matter physics, in particular superconductivity and micromagnetics, Coulomb systems, and vortex dynamics. She has developed fundamentally new techniques for analyzing the dynamics of interacting particles or defects and the spatial patterns they form.
Her creative approach and capacity to work on a diverse but coherent family of problems shed new light on the Ginzburg-Landau model of superconductivity and the statistical mechanics of Coulomb-type systems.

Titulaire d’un doctorat de l’Université Paris-Sud en 1999, Sylvia Serfaty a été recrutée comme chargée de recherches au CNRS en 1999, puis en 2008 comme professeur à l’université Pierre-et-Marie-Curie. Elle mène également une brillante carrière au Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences de l’université de New York.
